Biodiversity, Hunting and Countryside Intergroup
The Intergroup was created in 1985 and is one of the oldest and most active parliamentary platform. It gathers MEPs from different political groups and various stakeholders promoting wildlife conservation, sustainable hunting, as well as the sustainable management of the countryside and cultural heritage. ELO supports the work of the Intergroup as co-secretariat with the European Federation for Hunting and Conservation (FACE).
The objectives of the Intergroup are to promote a sustainable use of wild species for biodiversity, wildlife management, rural development and forestry issues. Additionally, the Intergroup regularly focuses on cross cutting issues that affect socio-economic activities in rural areas and seek to build bridges between the civil society and decision makers.
Past debates and discussions have, for example, addressed issues such as climate change, forestry management, wildlife population, CAP reform and the 2020 EU Biodiversity Strategy and much more…
For the term 2019-2024, the Intergroup has been validated by European Parliament Conference of the Presidents and named the “Biodiversity, Hunting and Countryside Intergroup”, with the support of more than 130 MEPs. The re-establishment of this Intergroup gives a strong political signal from the Members of the European Parliament to support key activities in Europe’s rural areas for biodiversity.
Strasbourg, 13 February 2020 – Today, the members of the "Biodiversity, Hunting, Countryside" Intergroup held their first meeting to agree on the President and Vice-Presidents. This meeting was an important first step to lay the basis for the Intergroup’s work in this parliamentary term. The Intergroup will be instrumental in bringing together the perspectives of key rural actors in shaping major policy discussions on the next EU Biodiversity Strategy, the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the Green Deal.
