ELO Responds to EU call for evidence on on-farm animal welfare
The European Commission has launched a call for evidence to modernize EU legislation on animal welfare for certain species. In response, ELO submitted its position, highlighting the need for balanced, practical, and economically viable solutions that maintain high welfare standards without compromising farm resilience and food security.
ELO emphasizes that sustainability must include its economic pillar. Proposed changes should be evidence-based, species-specific, and supported by comprehensive impact assessments. We advocate for digital tools and animal-based indicators to improve monitoring while minimizing administrative burdens.
Transition periods and financial support are essential to ensure realistic implementation, particularly for farmers who have already invested in compliance. Moreover, ELO calls for equivalent standards for imports to prevent unfair competition and uphold consumer trust.
A flexible, impact-driven approach is key to achieving ambitious welfare goals while safeguarding Europe’s diverse farming systems.
