Press release - ELO welcomes provisional agreement on New Genomic Techniques (NGTs)
Brussels, 4 December 2025 — The European Landowners’ Organization (ELO) welcomes the provisional agreement reached between the Council and the European Parliament on the regulation of New Genomic Techniques (NGTs). This long-awaited step comes after years of debate and substantial scientific evidence demonstrating the safety and potential of these tools—well before the Commission issued its proposal in 2023.
ELO considers this one of the few EU initiatives that directly addresses the steadily shrinking toolbox available to European farmers. By offering faster and more precise breeding options, NGTs have the capacity to deliver crop varieties that are more resilient to drought, pests and other climatic challenges, helping farmers adapt to a rapidly changing environment while maintaining production and quality.
