#Peatlandsmatter campaign

2025

Across Europe, diverse voices – from scientists to policymakers, landowners, and conservationists – share why peatlands are essential for climate action, biodiversity, water regulation, and people. Despite covering only 3 – 4% of Earth’s land surface, they store a third of the world’s soil carbon, making them natural carbon sinks. Yet, in Europe, most are drained and degraded. Restoring them is key to tackling the climate and biodiversity crises.
These videos introduces the voices of stakeholders from across Europe who explain why #PeatlandsMatter.

About the Project

The project “Building the European Peatlands Initiative: a strong alliance for peatland climate protection in Europe” is part of the European Climate Initiative (EUKI). It aims to strengthen pan-European collaboration for the protection, restoration, and sustainable use of peatlands. The project supports the development and adoption of peatland strategies and policies based on up-to-date data, while fostering multi-stakeholder cooperation. It also promotes the sharing of best practices in peatland restoration and encourages cross-border collaboration to successfully mitigate climate change on a European scale.
