Forests
In 2024, key forest-related initiatives advanced under the EU Biodiversity and Forestry Strategies. A major milestone was the adoption of Article 10 on forest ecosystem restoration, achieved after difficult negotiations. Although the importance of a European bioeconomy was widely acknowledged, concrete measures to promote it were lacking.
ELO worked alongside Member States to successfully advocate for a dedicated EU bioeconomy strategy in the Commission’s upcoming work programme. Additionally, the Forest Monitoring Regulation was published at the close of the previous Commission’s mandate. ELO continues to identify gaps and push for recognition of existing national monitoring systems.
In parallel, ELO, along with other observer organisations, has continued to support Forest Europe’s initiatives. This includes reaffirming the importance of Sustainable Forest Management and welcoming the establishment of the Forest Risk Facility.
