Climate & natural resources
The ELO supports climate neutrality by 2050. Agricultural soils and forests provide valuable carbon storage, which can be further enhanced with appropriate management. However, current investments tend to prioritise technological removals over nature-based ones.
In 2025, attention will intensify on the implementation of the Carbon Removal Certification Framework. ELO advocates for fair recognition of land-based efforts and is closely following discussions on methodologies for enteric fermentation and manure management reductions. On soil, 2024 saw significant progress on the Soil Monitoring Law. From the beginning, ELO appreciated that the directive took exciting frameworks into account, namely LUCAS.
While a full Water Resilience Strategy was delayed to 2025, ELO engaged with revisions to the water package, raising concerns over impacts on farmers’ access to plant protection tools. Looking ahead, we will continue to promote nature-based approaches to improve watershed health and resilience.
